the human condition

it is so important to me to exist amongst art
a corner of the dining room

it is all around me - everywhere

over the mantle

a home without art would never suit me
part of the living room

One of the first oil paintings that i ever made was a surrealistic view of my living room.
I had lots of pictures of frida in that room.
do you see her there?
i was inexperienced and painted her neck like a linebacker

Frida has been a topic of many recent online conversations i've found myself in.

So many of us relate to Frida - both her life and her work.

I ripped this photograph of one of Frida's paintings from a book.

After so many recent discussions i wanted to revisit how Frida inspires me.

I wanted to do a sketch of the above painting and really get into it - to see what really moved me.

I  made my notes around the sketch.

Like everyone, many of my reasons for being inspired by Frida are personal - yet because they are so common, i bet they aren't so personal after all.
i mean, really.
the human condition is the human condition.

inspiration avenue is having a big shebang to celebrate one jillion participants.
i used to not like links which required conforming to a theme.
but now i believe that hosted links like IA give us a point/ a place to come together and say, 'yep.  i took this idea and it brought me here - please look at what i made'.

that is so cool.

tomorrow i'll share dirty details with you on free live video art workshops.
i want it to be free and open to everyone so that no one is left out.  i think that so so often talent and ability and passion goes untended because of finances or time or lack of encouragement.
so these will be free.
and i'll vary the times.
you will love it, totally.

also, i have a video for you guys on how to put in your own feather hair extensions - i'll try and have that edited and spliced together tomorrow.  so you can quit paying your nazi hairdresser to do it.
omg. i totally love 'do it myself for free' shit.

and don't worry - it's not dreadlocks - the tutorial is for hair hair - not dreaded hair.

so that's good news.

okay.
quit being a pussy, go to IA.

I don't even have the words for how much I love you. And I love your house glimpses. And that I am not the only one to adore Frida obsessively. And video workshops that rock!

OMG...I sooooo want to go to your house for dinner....to take a long, leisurely tour of all the nooks and crannys of your museum...nay....shrine to art and creation...with a glass of wine in hand sipping and soaking it all in!!

Then I would totally raid your fridge and whip something up for us....I'm really good at collage cooking...but I only do it at other people's houses....cuz cooking is just too much work otherwise :)

I so wish I had the confidence to put my own work all over the walls like that....Halloween is New Years eve to me so watch this space!! And I am so going to put feathers in my hair again so hurry with that video :D
You and your infectious "need" for art have been my inspiration this year. Bless you :D XXX

Wheee!!!! I think this post is fantastic! I love seeing all of the art in your house! The red of your dining room is very cool too (my dining room is also a deep color... except orange)

I love the elephant - wait until you see the painting I started for the "surreal" theme at the butterfly effect... It has a similar feel, but different... cool, but also supports the theory that no art is truly original (even though I saw your elephant after I started mine... kinda makes me want to do something different 'cause your elephant is so good... but I like my elephant too... the dilemma...)

I think it is very, very cool of you to offer free online classes... and the feather thing is cool too (although I think my hair is too short for it).

Wow - I really am rambling this morning - sorry. I'm just so tired.

I'll stop now.

Confession time. I see a lot of mention about Frida around the net but I don't really know who she is/was. I am terrible, TERRIBLE with names. Any names. I barely manage to call my children by their names and not the dog names. I know what art I like but rarely who painted it so chances are I have seen her work and love it but didn't know it. I need to learn more about this stuff. I really do. I feel thick sometimes in comparison to you guys that know all the names.

As for your house. Wow. And wow again! Love it.

OK, now it's my turn to be envious. Your living room is so colorful and fun. I can see how art takes center stage in your life. And being surrounded by art makes every day so special, especially in the art community.

If walls could talk, they'd thank you for the art on display; lots of energy and color, tfs!

Wow - fab rooms! How could you not be creative living in a house like that!

Love your exploration of the Frida painting, and your thoughts on inspiration. I agree there are some themes that we are all drawn to as part of the human condition.
